With times as tough as they are at the moment, at MT we detect a new sort of leader coming to the fore. Whether they are born or they are made, these new leaders are not currently the tub-thumping, charismatic Henry the Fifth types, sword in hand leading from the front and urging troops “once more unto the breach.”

Now the mood is more one of how to be a leader in retreat and we listen to the ancient Chinese strategist Sun-tzu – “To lead the people, walk behind them.” These new leaders seem quieter, more considered, less adrenaline-surging Alpha male. Possibly even more boring. When the going gets tough maybe the conventionally “tough” get sidelined.

One thing is for sure, the world of business and management doesn’t get any simpler. As the IBM Global CEO Survey shows complexity is on the rise. The ways of combating it remain the same – keeping close to and listening to customers; being innovative and flight of foot to ensure that you keep one step ahead of an ever-changing world.

Leadership Visions

Following MT’s Leadership Week on June 7th you can see how CEOs approach leadership challenges such as innovation, meeting customer requirements, balancing public and private concerns, global versus local requirements and more, as they talk to MT’s editor Matthew Gwyther.

The MT Leadership Visions microsite

In conjunction with the launch of the IBM Global CEO Survey Capitalizing on Complexity Managementtoday.com is launched its Leadership week on June 7.

This is the place where you can see a new, exclusive, MT video, presented by Management Today’s editor Matthew Gwyther, from each day of the Leadership week.

MT Leadership Visions

The Leadership week saw different business leaders attempt to answer the question that IBM has being asking CEOs worldwide: “In a world fraught with uncertainty, what are today's CEOs doing to strengthen their situations against competitors?”

In addition, from this web site you can download the entire Capitalizing on Complexity report or follow its findings chapter-by-chapter.

As IBM tells us, previously, CEOs have consistently identified change as their most pressing challenge. Today, CEOs are telling us that the complexity of operating in an increasingly volatile and uncertain world is their primary challenge. And, a surprising number of them told IBM’s survey that they feel ill-equipped to succeed in this drastically different world.

How are leaders dealing with this level of complexity? What strategies are the most successful organizations employing to tap into new opportunities, and overcome the barriers to growth? To find out, we conducted over 1500 face-to-face interviews–the largest known study of its kind with CEOs in 60 countries, representing 33 industries.
